For the current tax year (2021-2022), employees who earn above £9,568 during the year must pay National Insurance.
In addition, self-employed people who earn more than £6,515 will pay Class 2 contributions while those who earn more than £9,568 will pay Class 4. For the current tax year (2020-2021), Class 2 contributions are required at £6,475 while Class 4 at £9,500.
